Tarpum Bay

Local fisherman cleaning catch at Tarpum Bay dock.

While waiting for several back to back cold fronts to blow through while anchored in Rock Sound, Eleuthera, we decided to rent a car for the day and explore the island. Driving our little Toyota, with the steering wheel on the right side of the car, and staying on the left hand side of the road, made for a fun experience.

Our rental car's model name is not likely something you would see in the States.

We drove through the settlement of Tarpum Bay, a small fishing village that we had seen from Pandion while sailing a few days before. Tarpum Bay is an interesting and eclectic place, with homes, and shops built among the ruins of an earlier settlement from many years ago.

We have seen this before in the islands. In some cases, hurricanes have been change events that  destroy communities and they are abandoned. Over time, some revive. Tarpum Bay looks like it has had it's share of storms, and yet it remains a community.

The Tarpum Bay dock is well known for buying fresh seafood harvested locally. We saw triggerfish, spiny lobster, and queen conch on the tables. A few tourists were waiting as a local harvester cleaned some fish.

We chose not to buy anything, opting instead for fresh pizza from Mate and Jenny's in Palmetto Point. We had discovered this little gem during our first cruise last year. Good stuff!
