the boat

Pandion at anchor in her home waters in the Ten Thousand Islands of Southwest Florida. Her hailing port is Rookery Bay, a 110,000-acre wildlife sanctuary, and refuge for sea turtles, manatees, dolphin, and hundreds of species of birds and fish.

Pandion is a 44-foot long, 25-foot wide blue water catamaran. She is a 2009 owner's version Lagoon 440, powered by 1,250 square feet of sail (plus "Big Blue" a 1,000 sf Code 0 furling sail) and two Yanmar inboard diesel engines. She has six solar panels that help keep her five Lifeline AGM batteries charged up, to power onboard systems, including two refrigerators and a chest freezer.

Pandion is also equipped with a dive tank compressor, a Spectra water maker that converts seawater to freshwater, satellite communications and wifi extender for staying in contact with family and friends (and this blog) while cruising.

Pandion is the genus for the osprey, one of our favorite raptors. It was also the name of the 17 ft. Mako boat that Ted Below, Rookery Bay Reserve's first Audubon warden, used to patrol the waters of the Reserve back in the 1980's. Gary's 30-year career at Rookery Bay began with spending time with Ted on the original Pandion, an extraordinary experience.

We intend to live aboard and cruise as sustainably as we can: using sails and wind to travel, solar panels for electrical power, and following a lifestyle that "leaves no trace" as much as possible.

View of Pandion from top of the mast. You can see our six solar panels mounted on the transom arch,
and our two kayaks tied to the starboard and port lifelines.

Pandion is an owner's version Lagoon 440, with three cabins.
The starboard hull is dedicated to master stateroom and bathroom with full shower.
