Celebrating Life at Chub Cay

S/V Pandion departs Chub Cay on passage to Bimini, using Big Blue.

Before departing from the Berry Islands to sail on to Bimini, we decided to celebrate our first chapter of Bahama islands adventuring by stopping off at Chub Cay Resort.

Chub Cay is located at the southwest end of the Berry Islands, and is often the last anchorage for cruisers to use before making passages west across the Bahama Banks.

For Brenda and I, Chub Cay represented an opportunity to step off our boat for a brief time and enjoy a few ice cold beers and dinner in air conditioned comfort, and reflect back on the last six months of our journey.

We were the only ones at the Chub Cay Club bar that evening.
Beers were ice cold!

After anchoring S/V Pandion outside the marina, we got cleaned up and into real clothes (no tee shirts or swim shorts) and took Newt into the resort.

Chub Cay Marina and Resort caters to a different clientele (affluent to extremely wealthy), and we felt a bit out of place motoring our dinghy in. But... life is short and we were in the mood to celebrate, so we got over it.

Stepping into the Chub Cay Clubhouse, we were surprised to find ourselves to be the only guests at the bar.  The walls of the Clubhouse were covered with framed photographs of marlin from big game fishing tournaments dating back to the 1960s. Fortunately, the practice of taking marlin has evolved into catch and release fishing to help conserve stocks of billfish.

By the time we finished our drinks, there were about a dozen more people who had arrived for dinner. Dinner was great, and we stuffed ourselves, starting with fresh bread and salad.

Note the Bahamian mockingbird perched on the tip of it's bill.

After our celebration dinner, we returned to our boat and prepped for the next passage to Bimini. The following day we had perfect sailing conditions, allowing us to put up Big Blue and averaging 7 knots as we covered 80 nautical miles west.
