S/V Pandion at anchor off Frazer's Hog Cay in the Berry Islands. |
After the weather settled from Beryl, we have continued our journey with S/V Pandion by taking her northwest, stopping at Rose Island off Nassau, and then on to the Berry Islands. Summer weather in the Bahamas is heating up!
Our plan is to return to the States for the peak of hurricane season (August through October) and return to the Islands of the Bahamas in November/December. We've found a new port in the U.S. for S/V Pandion at Jekyll Island, Georgia.

Summer thunderstorms passing through. |
Brenda and I have not yet spent time on Jekyll Island, but we've heard from family and fellow cruisers about the area, and we are looking forward to exploring this new place.
Our boat insurance company has also confirmed that Georgia is a good choice; insurance rates are less than what we experienced in Florida.

Typical afternoon squalls building up south of Chub Cay on the passage to the Berry Islands. |
Our game plan is to fuel up at Chub Cay, continue west to Bimini, and then north to West End on Grand Bahama Island. This location will stage S/V Pandion for the Gulf Stream crossing back to Florida.
We've also learned to adapt our passage plans to the changing weather conditions.
With the luxury of time in our retirement, something that we have not had in our past sailing experiences, we can choose to wait out bad weather if necessary. Bad weather days become boat project days, and sometimes movie and popcorn days :)
