Crab Encounter

Sally Lightfoot crab posing for a closeup.

While kayaking along the rocky shoreline of Cistern Cay at low tide, you can spot small nimble crabs picking their way through the rough terrain, foraging for food. Every time that I approached these crabs, called a Sally Lightfoot, they scramble away with lightening fast speed.

Finally, after may unsuccessful attempts to catch one with my camera, I came across one that was as interested in me as I was in him (or her). Needless to say, I took advantage of the posing crab and captured it on film. OK, not film, but digitally.

Curious crab.

On a brief side note, we have anchored Pandion securely in a well protected cove in the Berry Islands while Subtropical Storm Alberto passes through, far to the west. Alberto is hitting Florida and the Gulf with lots of rain, and we are getting some gusting winds and rain that we anticipate will diminish by Monday. This a little early in the season for a storm to blow in from south of Cuba to the Gulf.

We have been very fortunate to have crossed paths with the Hibberd family again, after first meeting them over two years ago in the Dry Tortugas, onboard their catamaran Cool Runnings. We will highlight them in another post, and it has been a great pleasure for us to see this family of four again after nearly completing their epic circumnavigation. What an adventure!
