Sand Cay: amazing place!

Sand Cay, near Little Grand Cay, at low tide.
From the start of our new adventures, Brenda and I have been on the lookout for those unique, off the beaten path, amazing places that we can spend extra time exploring, now that we the gift of time (retirement). We found such a spot near the settlement of Little Grand Cay and Walker's Cay.

The Sand Cay anchorage is a series of rocky islands, patch reefs, beautiful white sand beaches, and sea grass beds that provide habitat for juvenile sea turtles (we saw dozens of them), eagle rays, conch, fish, crabs, Atlantic Tropic Birds (their mating season), and many others.

Truly an amazing place. We spent days exploring the area, and we had a ball. Brenda and I rode the tidal current in across a sea grass bed, laughing like a couple of kids (we are sometimes). What is striking to me about Sand Cay is how pristine it is, how quiet it is when the weather calms down, hearing only the sound of tropic birds chirping as they flew over Pandion, always in pairs.

Only a few sailboats passed through during our time there.

We took our dinghy Newt for a long meandering ride through a mangrove tidal creek, discovering eagle rays "flying" underneath us,  small sea turtles (hawksbill?) gliding through clear shallow waters, and schools of needlefish following along.

We will never forget it.

Sand Cay environmental education in action!
