Kayaking on Great Sale Cay

Taking a rest stop along the west shoreline of Great Sale.
Last Saturday Brenda and I took advantage of great weather to launch our Folbot kayaks off Pandion and explore the west shore of Great Sale Cay near Grand Bahama Island. Waters were shallow and crystal clear. Lots of seagrass and soft corals, rocky shoreline and white sand beaches.

Had a close encounter with a 4 ft reef shark that had wandered over to check my kayak out. He was as surprised as I was to be looking at each other from 3 feet apart, and he took off in the opposite direction. Fortunately, due to my training as a marine biologist, I didn't scream in front of  Brenda :)

We watched a juvenile sea turtle swim between our kayaks, then swim off faster than I would have believed possible. In less than a minute, he returned to watch us. A hooded merganser (Ginger, check me on this) landed and grazed along the shallows, keeping an eye on us.

Quick note on our Folbot kayaks: We purchased these a few years ago, because they can be broken down and fit nicely in one of our forward lockers. Unfortunately, Folbot folded as a company about two years ago. They made a great product, and we are happy to have them with us on our journey.
